Sununu, the right choice for Governor

New Hampshire is a great state in many ways — tied for the lowest unemployment in the nation, repeatedly ranked as one of the healthiest states in the country, a hi-tech business hub and a world-renowned tourist destination.

There are serious problems, however, that must be addressed by the next Legislature and governor — the opioid crisis, the need for a better educated workforce, deteriorating transportation infrastructure and an aging population, to name a few of many.

With these and more issues in mind the Seacoast Media Group editorial board chose to endorse Chris Sununu in the race for governor.

Our decision to endorse Sununu, a Republican, instead of Democrat Colin Van Ostern did not come quickly or easily, nor was it unanimous.

During editorial board meetings, both candidates identified key issues that must be addressed over the next two years during which the winner will serve as governor. Many, if not most, are among the concerns shared by our editorial board members.

Our meeting with Van Ostern touched upon the opioid crisis, Medicaid expansion, women’s health services funded in part by the state, and increased funding for mental health services — all of which collectively struck home with our editorial board members.

Sununu’s goals were three-fold: jobs, addressing the opioid crisis and education. He spoke passionately, stressing his role as a father, businessman and community member instead of a politician.

Clearly, both candidates understand the importance of their role should they be elected governor. The difference, however, for our editorial board came down to their resumes and backgrounds.

While both have served as members of the governor’s Executive Council, which has exposed them to the inner workings of government, Sununu’s business background in particular gives him an edge over Van Ostern.
